I was in the room, leading a major studio's first license deal with Netflix. I pushed for Netflix to require user passwords and to share aggregate viewing data since they guide pricing and programming decisions. Plus, info like that was routinely reported by movie theaters and Nielsen. Without foresight, other business objectives took priority. Password sharing was rampant, creators were blind to viewing insights, and an ecosystem unravelled. Password sharing only eased when streamers began using subscriber growth as a Wall Street growth metric, and a siloed, fragmented ecosystem emerged.
